Reimagining a modern workplace within a heritage building.
Located in Calgary’s historic Keg Building, this project reimagines a workplace that balances the character of heritage architecture with the flexibility and innovation of a modern tech company.
Client: BlackSquare
Design Concept: Insite Licensed Interior Design
Location: The Keg Building | Calgary AB
Type: Heritage Adaptive Reuse | Workplace
The vision for BlackSquare’s space was to create a workplace that reflects both craft and innovation — bridging the company’s deep roots in the wine and spirits world with its cutting-edge digital expertise. Exposed brick and timber beams were retained to celebrate authenticity, while sleek glazed partitions, oak detailing, and soft acoustics establish a contrast between heritage and high-tech precision.
Project Intent
Design Strategy
Preserve. Maintain original architectural details and natural materials that evoke a sense of legacy.
Adapt. Introduce demountable partitions to define flexible collaboration zones, allowing for future growth and reconfiguration without altering the historic shell.
Enhance. Layer in biophilic elements, warm neutral tones, and modern lighting to balance focus and hospitality — echoing the sensory richness of the wine industry itself.
